On a typical day, Mama Lucy Hospital receives over 1,500 patients, with many more waiting outside its doors. However, thanks to a new IT upgrade, patients like Eunice Wambui can now breathe a sigh of relief. The new system, launched by Governor Mike Sonko, aims to improve patient service delivery, data collection, and record keeping.

According to Wambui, the hospital's previous congestion issues made it difficult for patients to receive timely care. "We live in this side of Eastlands, and this is the nearest hospital, but it is ever crowded and by the time you get service, you will have given up," she said. However, with the new system, patients can now pick a ticket number and meet a vendor when they arrive, reducing wait times significantly.

The Sh5 million system has been effective in improving service delivery, with Medical Superintendent Musa Mohammed noting that previous challenges have reduced significantly. "We have made tremendous progress with our staff quickly adopting it and seeing it improve efficiency despite the few challenges at some of our departments," he said.

The new system is part of a broader effort by the county government to improve healthcare services in Nairobi. Governor Sonko has also announced plans to employ over 300 health workers, including 260 nurses and clinical officers, and 60 medical officers, to help address the workforce deficit in the county's hospitals.

Additionally, the UAP Old Mutual Foundation has committed to partnering with the county government to support vulnerable communities in healthcare financing. "The foundation remains committed to working with local governments in supporting vulnerable communities and initiatives geared towards healthcare financing," said Dr. Peter Muthoka, Chairman of the UAP Old Mutual Foundation.
