On November 21, 2019, Ezra Mwangi Njenga, a 22-year-old Actuarial Science student at Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology, drowned in Sagana River while swimming with friends.

The body was found a week later, floating near Gatiki bridge in Mukurweini Sub-County, about seven kilometers from the scene of the drowning.

Njenga, who hailed from Kinangop constituency in Nyandarua County, was a fourth-year student with only two weeks remaining to complete his final exam before the tragedy struck.

The university's students' council released a statement informing the public of the recovery of Njenga's body and sent condolences to his family, friends, classmates, and the entire Dedan Kimathi fraternity.

Franklin Manyara, the council secretary general, described Njenga as a 'great mind and a hero' in the institution.
