Dr. Macharia Irungu, a 28-year veteran of the oil and gas industry, has been appointed as the new Managing Director of Kenya Pipeline Corporation. The appointment was made by Petroleum and Mining Cabinet Secretary John Munyes, who stated that Irungu emerged as the top candidate among 88 applicants interviewed by the board of directors.
According to Munyes, the recruitment process was conducted by the KPC board of Directors, with officials from the Public Service Commission observing the process throughout. The board received 88 applicants for the position, with a final shortlist of 9 candidates being interviewed.
Irungu brings a wealth of experience to the role, having spent 11 years at high management levels in the industry. His appointment has been welcomed by many, who see it as a positive step for the corporation.
However, the recruitment process has not been without controversy. In July, KPC invited qualified candidates to apply for the position, but later announced that the recruitment would be done afresh, citing a lack of basic documentary requirements from most applicants.
The top job at KPC has been dogged by corruption allegations in the past, with former bosses including Ex-MD Joe Sang's predecessor Charles Tanui facing charges related to the supply of hydrant valves.
