Heavy rains and potential flooding are expected to hit various parts of Kenya from November 29 to December 4, 2019, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.
The main areas of concern include Narok, Kajiado, Bomet, Kericho, Nakuru, Migori, Nyamira, Kisii, Homa Bay, Kisumu, and Siaya, as well as Nairobi, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Machakos, and Makueni.
Residents are advised to be on the lookout for floods, as heavy rainfall is expected to continue throughout the season with occasional breaks.
According to Met Kenya, heavy rainfall of more than 30 mm in 24 hours is expected to start on November 29, 2019, in the South Rift, Central Rift, and Nyanza Regions.
The Meteorological department has warned that flooding and landslides may be triggered by any substantial amount of rainfall in low-lying areas and over hilly grounds.
Residents are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields, and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lightning strikes.
People in landslide-prone areas, especially over the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mt. Kenya, and other hilly areas over the western region, should be on high alert.
