On November 29, 2019, the Office of the Auditor General began investigating how Football Kenya Federation (FKF) used the Sh244 million allocated for Harambee Stars' preparation for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Egypt.
According to Sports PS Kirimi Kaberia, the federation had submitted a report on the expenditure, but the Ministry of Sports found it unsatisfactory, prompting the government to seek the auditor general's intervention.
"FKF gave us their report and we sent it back with questions," Kaberia said during a National Assembly Committee on Sports hearing.
He added that the report had issues with accountability, and the auditor general was reviewing the documents to provide a factual opinion on the expenditure figures.
The investigation comes amid allegations that the PS had an unresponsive attitude towards sports federations, including FKF, which have accused him of rarely finding time to listen to their grievances and hear them out.
FKF had received Sh244 million from the government for preparations and emoluments for players and technical staff ahead of the Afcon tournament.
