On November 29, 2019, AFC Leopards held a crisis meeting to address the financial crunch threatening the Kenyan Premier League club.
Players have been unpaid for three and a half months, prompting a go-slow and potential departure of key players, including Burundian midfielder Tresor Ndikumana and Rwandan Vincent Habamahoro.
Chairman Dan Shikanda rallied the branch chairmen and fans to support the club in negotiating with corporate companies for sponsorship.
Despite the go-slow, the team arrived in Mumias ahead of their match against Nzoia Sugar FC at the Sports Complex.
‘The team left last evening and they are already in Mumias for that match, let’s see how it will be, the team has not trained the entire week,’ Shikanda said.
Shikanda termed the situation as ‘sorry’ and in need of urgent remedy, appealing to well-wishers to help with the club’s financial issues.
Low fan turnout at home matches in Machakos is exacerbating the problem, costing the club financially.
Shikanda remains confident that the club will secure a sponsor before the end of the year, providing a much-needed relief to officials.
