Published on November 29, 2019, the government has allocated Kshs 1 billion to respond to the impact of floods countrywide.
Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna stated that the ongoing heavy rains have affected 350,000 people, with 16,700 rendered homeless.
He noted that the disaster has left 1,500 people homeless in West Pokot county following last weekend's landslide.
According to Oguna, 32 counties were mostly affected by the disaster, resulting in the loss of 118 lives and the washing away of 11,000 livestock.
The government has supplied food, medicine, and other required items to the affected areas, with a commitment to put measures in place to prevent further loss of lives and properties.
Speaking in Kapenguria, Oguna emphasized the government's efforts to assist those affected, stating, 'For the last two months, disasters through floods or landslide have affected the country where 32 counties are mostly affected, Including West Pokot. The Government has put in more efforts to see to it that those affected are assisted.'
He further stated that the transport sector is most affected, with roads and bridges damaged, hampering transportation in the county.
Concerning West Pokot County, Oguna confirmed that 43 people are dead, with 1,500 displaced, and expressed concern that majority of those who lost their lives are very young, between the age of eight to 20 years.
The government requires Sh. 20 million to assist the affected people in West Pokot County, with a total of Sh. 1.052 billion required for all affected people in the country.
County Commissioner Apollo Okello stated that three camps have been set up in the County to cater for the affected people, with officials from the Kenya National Highways Authority carrying out assessment across the country to check the state of the affected roads before starting to repair them.
