On November 29, 2019, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) announced a major crackdown on illicit trade along the porous Kenya-Ethiopia border.
Smugglers have long exploited the Ethiopian border, bringing contraband goods into Kenya through areas such as Sessi, Laga, Moyale, and Forole.
According to KRA's Deputy Commissioner for Customs and Border Control, Samul Kamau, the authority is working to bring the border up to global standards.
As part of this effort, Kamau revealed that regular investigations will be conducted in Moyale and Sololo sub-counties, which border Ethiopia.
A multi-sectoral approach is crucial in combating dishonest merchants who seek to evade taxes, Kamau emphasized.
Collaborations with the Ethiopian government will also be key in ensuring compliance among merchants, Kamau added.
Illicit trade poses a significant threat to national security, promotes the entry of sub-standard products, and denies taxes to the KRA.
