On Sunday, athletes from across the country will participate in the 15th edition of the World Aids Day marathon in Kisumu, a city known for its vibrant running culture.

The marathon, which has been held annually since 2006, is expected to attract over 250 local athletes and a number of foreigners, including participants from Uganda, the United States, and Germany.

According to Nyanza North Athletics Kenya Chairman Joseph Ochieng, apart from the main 42km race, there will also be a 21km race, as well as relay races and individual participant categories.

"So far, the Ugandan Fame Athletics Club team has confirmed participation in the relay races, and we have many individual participants who have confirmed participation in the marathon," Ochieng said.

The marathon will begin at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports grounds at 7am, with a 10km route marked within Milimani estate in Kisumu. Cash awards will be given to the winners of each category in the race.

"We will have participants of the full marathon go round the identified route in Milimani. Cash awards will be given to the winners of each category in the race," Ochieng added.

Richard Brodsky, the founder of the World Aids Day marathon, which was started in 2006, will also participate in the event along with his wife Jody.

Free medical clinics will be held after the marathon to offer treatment and medication to children across orphanages in Kisumu and Siaya counties.
