Uhuru Kenyatta's Call for Unity Falls on Deaf Ears ¶
President Uhuru Kenyatta's call for unity among political groups has fallen on deaf ears, with Inua Mama, a women's group supporting Deputy President William Ruto, refusing to merge with other groups.
During the launch of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report on November 27, 2019, at the Bomas of Kenya, President Kenyatta urged leaders of political groups to dissolve and merge to promote unity and development.
However, Inua Mama's leader, Alice Wahome, dismissed the call, saying the group's agenda is to improve the lives of women in rural areas and not to be a political tool.
Wangui Ngirichi, a representative of women in Kirinyaga County, supported Wahome's stance, saying Inua Mama's focus on improving the lives of women makes it a unique group that cannot be merged with others.
On the other hand, Sabina Chege, a representative of women in Muranga County, promised President Kenyatta that Team Embrace and Inua Mama would be dissolved to promote unity among women.
However, Inua Mama's leader, Alice Wahome, rejected the promise, saying the group's agenda is to improve the lives of women and not to be a political tool.
President Kenyatta's call for unity among political groups has been met with resistance from some groups, with Inua Mama being one of them.
