Former Kigumo MP Onesmus Kihara Mwangi Dies Aged 76

Onesmus Kihara Mwangi, a former Member of Parliament for Kigumo, has passed away at the age of 76. He succumbed to diabetes on Thursday, November 28, 2019, at the Nairobi West Hospital where he was receiving treatment.

Mwangi served as Kigumo MP between 1997 and 2007. He first won the seat on a Democratic Party (DP) ticket in 1997 and later joined NARC in 2002, retaining his seat until he lost it in the 2007 general election to Jamleck Kamau of the Party of National Unity (PNU).

Before entering politics, Mwangi worked as the managing director of Kihara and Company Valuers and Surveyors between 1975 and 1997. He also served as an estate surveyor in the Ministry of Public Works between July 1971 and January 1978, and later as an estate superintendent at the now-defunct Nairobi City Commission between 1972 and 1975.

His personal assistant, Macharia Muthathai, confirmed his death and noted that a medical bill of KSh 5 million, incurred during his treatment, is yet to be settled. The current Kigumo lawmaker, Ruth Mwaniki, has written to the National Assembly Speaker, Justin Muturi, to seek assistance in settling the bill.

Onesmus Kihara Mwangi was an alumnus of the University of Nairobi. He is survived by his family and loved ones.
