Mwangi served as Kigumo MP between 1997 and 2007. He first won the seat on a Democratic Party (DP) ticket in 1997 and later joined NARC in 2002, retaining his seat until he lost it in the 2007 general election to Jamleck Kamau of the Party of National Unity (PNU).
Before entering politics, Mwangi worked as the managing director of Kihara and Company Valuers and Surveyors between 1975 and 1997.
