Published on November 29, 2019, a biometric report by Nairobi County has shed light on the aging workforce at City Hall.
According to the report, a staggering 5,709 out of 11,603 City Hall workers are aged 50 years and above, with 19 employees still on the payroll despite being above the retirement age of 60 years.
City Hall's acting County Secretary, Leboo Morintat, revealed that more than half of the workforce is made up of females, accounting for 6,118 against 5,485 males.
Mr. Morintat explained that the total number of employees is only 385 less than the number registered in the payroll in April, with the difference attributed to 200 retired employees and 85 engaged in training overseas.
The report also highlighted the presence of ghost workers, with 58 officers serving suspension due to disciplinary cases and 23 county employees passing away between April and November 2019.
Mr. Morintat emphasized the importance of the biometric card registration, launched by Governor Mike Sonko in May, in weeding out ghost workers and eradicating impostors.
Residents can now verify the authenticity of City Hall staff by sending a unique identification number to short code number 40471, receiving a response message indicating whether the employee is genuine or not.
