On November 29, 2019, the Office of the Auditor General began investigating the use of Sh244 million allocated to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for Harambee Stars' preparation for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

According to Sports PS Kirimi Kaberia, the federation had submitted a report on the expenditure, but the Ministry of Sports found it unsatisfactory, prompting the government to seek the auditor general's intervention.

FKF had received Sh244 million from the government to cater for the national football team's preparation and emoluments for players and technical staff in the run-up to the Afcon tournament hosted in Egypt.

When appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Sports, PS Kaberia revealed that the federation's report had issues with accountability, and the auditor general was in the process of reviewing the documents.

He pleaded with the committee to allow the auditor general to complete the process before providing factual information and requested another meeting to discuss FKF issues away from the cameras.
