Francis Atwoli, the Secretary-General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), has rejected the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report, saying it will bring chaos to the country.
Atwoli made the remarks on November 28, 2019, stating that the report's proposals would not solve the country's leadership crisis.
He emphasized that the current constitution needs to be revised to ensure that all Kenyans are involved in the decision-making process.
Atwoli suggested that the proposed constitution should include provisions for the appointment of the Prime Minister, who should have more powers to prevent being controlled by the President.
He also criticized the BBI report's proposal for the Prime Minister to be appointed by the President from among the elected Members of Parliament.
Atwoli's comments come as the BBI report is set to be debated in Parliament, with some politicians calling for its implementation.
However, Atwoli's rejection of the report has sparked debate among Kenyans, with some supporting his views and others criticizing him for opposing the BBI.
Atwoli's full statement on the BBI report is as follows:
"We know very well the problems we have in this country, but we refuse to face them head-on," He added that the proposed constitution should include provisions for the appointment of the Prime Minister, who should have more powers to prevent being controlled by the President. Atwoli's comments have sparked debate among Kenyans, with some supporting his views and others criticizing him for opposing the BBI.
