Published on November 29, 2019, a wayleave behind Mount Kenya University's campus in Nakuru Town has become a security risk after the institution stopped securing the area.
The university had reclaimed the service lane from a dumpsite as part of its corporate social responsibility but later withdrew its services following a dispute with a Nairobi-based blogger.
"This is a health risk to both traders and passersby because of the high-risk electricity cables. It is also no longer safe to pass around this place at night because of the mugging," said John Kamau, a resident who was recently accosted by muggers.
Kenya Power's Central Rift Regional Manager, Geoffrey Muli, expressed concern over the activities taking place under the power cables, stating that they posed a recipe for disaster.
Mount Kenya University's Nakuru campus director, Dr Emily Nyambisi, warned that the area's deterioration would compromise the security of the university and the general public.
