On November 28, 2019, Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka shared his thoughts on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) taskforce report, specifically the proposed Prime Minister's position.
Musyoka, a former vice president, expressed his desire for the Prime Minister to have more authority than currently proposed in the report. He suggested that the position should be as powerful as that of the current Majority Leader and open to a member of Parliament from either the National Assembly or the Senate.
‘I would have preferred a situation where the prime minister has some authority. I don’t know why the taskforce was so mean on the position,’ Musyoka said.
He also highlighted the need for the report to be explicit on the relationship between the Senate and the National Assembly, and to address the issue of party hopping to bring about political discipline.
While Musyoka lauded the proposals on the media being given primacy in the fight against corruption and rewarding whistleblowers, he expressed reservations about a measurable reward. He also supported the gender parity proposals but disagreed with the idea of the president and deputy president being of opposite genders, as proposed for governors.
