On November 28, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report, sparking a debate among lawmakers on its implementation.
More than 30 Members of Parliament, largely drawn from the president's Jubilee Party and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), have called on the President to establish a team of experts to oversee the implementation of the BBI report.
The MPs, who met within Parliament to take a common position on the way forward regarding the report, rejected suggestions by MPs allied to Deputy President William Ruto that the report be brought to Parliament for consideration.
According to nominated MP Godfrey Osotsi, the push to have the report come to parliament is 'diversionary' and aimed at promoting individual interests.
Under the proposed implementation committee, the team would fine-tune the proposals into a legal document, welcome public views on areas to be changed, and collect signatures across the country to support the report.
The draft bill would then be sent to the 47 county assemblies for consideration.
