IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has reassured Kenyans that the commission will deliver a free and fair election in 2022, despite the BBI report's recommendations for its overhaul.
Speaking on Thursday, Chebukati stated that no law has threatened his work, and the commission will continue undertaking its mandate as stipulated in the constitution.
He cited the expensive affair of disbanding the electoral commission, saying it would mean paying the current commissioners for the three years of their incomplete term, as well as 31 per cent of their gratuity as provided for by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
According to the BBI report released on November 27, the commission's overhaul is necessary due to low public confidence in its conduct of general elections.
However, Chebukati insisted that the IEBC stands strong, like any other constitutional body, and will continue to prepare for future electoral activities unless otherwise advised by the law.
He added, "We came in office in January 2017, our term of office ends in January 2023, so as far as I am concerned our contract is still on. I am not worried about it,"
