On November 27, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta unveiled the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report at Bomas of Kenya, which proposes that the National Government take over some core functions in Nairobi.
The report suggests that Nairobi be accorded a 'special' status, but this should not impede on the right of the people to representation at the Ward and Constituency levels.
Nairobi, being the capital city and an International City, houses all the arms of the Government and is also the third Global Headquarters of the United Nations.
However, frequent leadership wrangles have cast doubts on whether the city can still be managed by the county government.
Experts have also questioned the leadership style of Governor Mike Sonko, citing concerns over the running of the county's affairs.
Under the proposal, Nairobi will be handed massive investments in infrastructure that the formula of the Commission for Revenue Allocation cannot accommodate.
Despite this, Governor Sonko has expressed gratitude to President Kenyatta for his support on city projects, which he believes has helped develop Nairobi.
However, political players have read the proposal as a vote of no confidence in the administration of the county.
