On November 28, 2019, Sony Sugar Managing Director Bernard Otieno resigned, stating that he has opted for early retirement.
The decision comes after the company's board of directors sent him on compulsory leave in April this year over claims of embezzlement of funds.
The Kenya Union of Sugarcane Plantation and Allied Workers had issued a protest letter accusing Bernard of misappropriation of funds, leading to demonstrations in Awendo, Migori County, demanding approximately KSh100 million in salary arrears.
Background ¶
Senators had previously dismissed government plans to privatise sugar companies, while a KSh 86 billion debt write-off was proposed for struggling sugar companies.
Additionally, KBC, Postbank, and Sony Sugar had posted a combined KSh7.6 billion loss.
