On November 28, 2019, the High Court dismissed a defamation case filed by the Muslims for Human Rights organization (MUHURI) against the government for allegedly linking it with terror activities in the country.
Justice Dora Chepkony ruled that MUHURI had filed the case outside the stipulated statutory period, which is one year from the date of the alleged defamation.
The case centered around a 2015 government gazette notice that listed MUHURI as an associate of the militant group Al-Shabaab following the Garissa University attack.
According to the notice, published in the Kenya Gazette on April 13, 2017, MUHURI was accused of funding terror activities in the country.
However, in her verdict, Justice Chepkony stated that the organization had failed to file the case within the stipulated time frame, rendering it invalid.
MUHURI had argued that the government's actions had dented its reputation and that of people associated with the organization, and that it could not conduct its activities when the government closed its accounts.
