On November 26, 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in Ruaraka, Nairobi, where a pregnant woman was brutally assaulted by her husband for returning home late.

Ferdinand Geoffrey Ombulu, the accused, allegedly beat up and inflicted grievous harm on his five-month pregnant wife, Damaris Wanja, on Tuesday last week.

Appearing before Makadara Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga, Ombulu admitted to battering his wife because she returned home at 11 pm, which he deemed as “too late”.

Wanja was taken to Ruaraka Health Centre in a critical condition, where she was later transferred to Nairobi Women’s Hospital and then to the Kenyatta National Hospital’s high dependency unit.

Corporal Damaris Gwendo, handling the case, stated that it is believed Ombulu had tortured Wanja for a lengthy period before taking her to hospital.

Magistrate Nyaga granted Corporal Gwendo seven days to complete investigations, which were initially sought to be completed within 10 days.
