On September 20, 2018, a day after Monica Kimani's murder, her brother George Kimani arrived at her Lamuria Gardens Apartment in Nairobi's Kilimani to find her door locked from inside. The Standard, November 28, 2019.

Reagan Buluku, the caretaker of the apartment, testified that he had been working there for four years and had never seen anything like this before. He described how he and Monica's brother George went to her house and confirmed that it was locked, with the sound of the television and running water coming from inside.

They organised with the gardener to bring a ladder and climb through the balcony window to access the house. Once inside, the gardener started shouting and they later broke into the house to find Monica's body in the bathtub, with her legs and hands tied and blood flowing from her slit throat.

Former TV presenter Reagan Buluku testified before Justice James Wakiaga in the case where Joseph Irungu alias Jowie and his girlfriend, former television presenter Jacqueline Maribe, are facing trial over Monica's murder.

Another witness, Chelang'at Ruto, positively identified the clothes Jowie had on the night Monica was killed, which were produced in court as evidence. She testified that they are good friends with Maribe and had been introduced to Jowie, who she also said was their friend.

Chelang'at said that on the night Monica was killed, they went to Citizen TV with a friend called June Juliet to prepare Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko for a live show. After the show, they picked Maribe and went to Club 40-40, where Jowie joined them late into the night.
