Published on November 27, 2019, the US State Department issued a travel advisory warning Americans against traveling to Burkina Faso.

The country has been fighting an Islamist militant revolt since 2015, with the insurgency spreading from neighboring Mali to the east.

According to a toll compiled by AFP, nearly 600 people have been killed by the insurgents, while civil society groups put the tally at over 1,000.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees reported in October that violence in Burkina Faso had caused over a quarter of a million people to flee their homes in the previous three months.

"The US government is unable to provide emergency services to US citizens throughout most of the country," the advisory stated.
