Guinea Bissau's presidential election has headed to a runoff after the November 24 poll failed to produce an outright winner.

According to provisional results released by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) on November 27, 2019, Domingos Simões Pereira, 56, of the ruling African Party of the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), secured 40.13% of the vote.

He was followed by Umaro Sissoco Embaló, 47, of the main opposition party MADEM-G15, with 27.65% of the vote, while Nuno Nabiam came in third with 13.6%.

Approximately 750,000 voters participated in the election, which was supervised by the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) following a pre-poll crisis sparked by the sacking of Prime Minister Aristides Gomes by President José Mário Vaz on October 29, 2019.

President Vaz's decision to replace Gomes with his ally Faustino Imbali had led to a crisis that forced Ecowas to intervene in support of Gomes, who also accused Embalo of plotting a coup.
