Climate change is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention. The consequences of global warming are far-reaching and devastating, with catastrophic weather patterns causing widespread destruction and loss of life.
According to Dr. Loice Kipkiror, an environmental consultant and lecturer at the University of Kabianga, the effects of climate change are multifaceted and can be mitigated through proactive measures.
One of the most significant consequences of climate change is the increase in extreme weather events, including floods, droughts, landslides, and more. These events can have devastating effects on the environment, causing loss of life, property damage, and displacement of communities.
Dr. Kipkiror notes that floods, in particular, can cause significant damage to the environment, including the destruction of crops, homes, and infrastructure. Droughts, on the other hand, can lead to food shortages, famine, and malnutrition.
However, there are steps that can be taken to mitigate the effects of climate change. Dr. Kipkiror suggests that planting cover crops, enhancing forest cover, and strengthening weak riverbanks can help prevent floods. Afforestation, climate-smart agriculture, and harvesting flood- and rainwater can also help combat droughts.
Additionally, cloud seeding can help prevent extraordinary hailstones, while planting live hedges and wood bunds can shield against storms.
But perhaps the most pressing issue is landslides, which can be triggered by heavy rainfall in areas devoid of vegetation cover. Dr. Kipkiror notes that landslides can be devastating, causing loss of life and property damage.
Recently, a landslide in West Pokot County resulted in the deaths of over 50 people. To prevent such disasters, Dr. Kipkiror suggests that the government should map out landslide-prone areas and provide specific information to vulnerable citizens.
Residents can also take action by being aware of landslide indicative signs, such as tilted trees, bulging earth, and cracks on the earth's surface. By taking proactive measures, we can mitigate the devastating effects of climate change and create a safer, more sustainable environment for all.
