On August 24, 2019, a horrific incident occurred at Kanga village in Rongo, Migori County, where a 20-year-old man defiled a 12-year-old girl. This heinous crime has now led to a 15-year prison sentence for the perpetrator.
Appearing before Rongo Law Courts Resident Magistrate Raymond Langat, Innocent Orwaro was accused of committing the offence. The magistrate found the testimonies of witnesses and documented evidence presented in court to be sufficient proof that Orwaro committed the offence beyond reasonable doubt.
Interestingly, Orwaro initially claimed to be 17 years old, but an age assessment conducted at the Rongo sub-county hospital revealed that he was indeed 20 years old.
Magistrate Langat expressed concern over the rising cases of defilement in Rongo and Awendo sub-counties, emphasizing the need for stricter measures to prevent such crimes.
Orwaro now has 14 days to appeal the judgment, failure to which he will serve the 15-year jail term.
