Kenya's First Lactose-Free Milk Hits the Market

On November 27, 2019, New Cooperative Creameries (KCC) launched the first 100% lactose-free milk in Kenya, a move aimed at addressing the growing prevalence of lactose intolerance in the country.

According to research, approximately 75% of the global population and 80% of people in Africa are lactose intolerant. This means that consuming regular milk can cause digestive issues such as diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, and belching.

Speaking at the launch, New KCC Managing Director Nixon Sigey said, "We are introducing the first 100% lactose-free milk in the country, a dairy product that will provide Kenyans with lactose intolerance the opportunity to enjoy their milk again. Lactose-free milk is a delicious option that not only retains the great taste of regular milk but also helps eliminate abdominal discomfort."

The milk, which comes in a natural cow's milk with no preservatives or added sugar, will be available in 250ml, 500ml, and 1-liter packs and will be sold at KSh 150 per liter in all KCC listed outlets.

Gold crown lactose-free milk is a result of a partnership between New KCC and Finnish firm Valio Dairy Limited and Tetra Pak Ltd. The launch of the product is a response to the recent prevalence of lactose intolerance cases in Kenya and the larger East Africa region.

Industrialisation CS Peter Munya was also present at the launch, which was held in Nairobi. The firm has invested in modernizing its facilities in Eldoret, Sotik, and Dandora, and has installed state-of-the-art machinery that has improved its efficiency and diversified its range of products in the Kenyan market.

Kenyans on social media welcomed the launch of the "new baby" in the market, with many expressing excitement and gratitude for the new product.
