On November 27, 2019, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report was officially released at the Bomas of Kenya, attended by top politicians led by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
However, the implementation of the report has sparked heated debate between Moses Kuria, a member of parliament from Gatundu South, and Gladys Wanga, a representative of Homa Bay County.
According to Wanga, the BBI report should be put to a national referendum, rather than being implemented by parliament, citing concerns over the reliability of lawmakers.
"Mageuzi lazima yafanywe kupitia kura ya maamuzi kwa mujibu wa kipengee cha 257, bunge limetekwa na haliwezi kuaminika," Wanga said.
Wanga also emphasized that the report should be taken directly to the people, rather than being implemented by parliament.
"BBI ipelekwe kwa wananchi," she added.
However, Kuria disagreed with Wanga, arguing that the BBI report should be implemented by parliament, rather than being put to a national referendum.
"Kwa nini igharimu Wakenya mabilioni na tumekubali kuipitisha? Naelewa vile mmevunjika moyo," Kuria said.
Kuria also accused the opposition of using the BBI report as a political tool ahead of the 2022 general elections.
"Refarenda ilikuwa kujiandaa kwa siasa za 2022, pole Nyathurwa," he added.
