Laikipia University has announced plans to confer an honorary doctorate degree in Science on world marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge at its 7th graduation ceremony on December 6, 2019.
The award recognizes Kipchoge's historic achievement of becoming the first human to run a sub two-hour marathon at the INEOS challenge, where he clocked 1:59:40.
According to the University, the senate noted that Kipchoge has made significant contributions to the realm of sports, particularly his recent achievement of becoming the first human in history to run a sub two-hour marathon.
As a testament to his outstanding achievements, Kipchoge was also crowned World Male Athlete of the Year for the second year running at the World Athletics awards gala held in Monaco, France, and received the highest civilian state commendation – Elder of the Order of Golden Heart (EGH) by President Uhuru Kenyatta on October 24.
Additionally, Kipchoge successfully defended his London marathon title in April, capturing his fourth title at the English capital in a course record of 2:02:37.
