Published on November 27, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced that he has identified a suitable candidate to serve as his deputy governor.

The appointment is contingent upon the assent of President Uhuru Kenyatta to the Assumption to the Office of Governor Bill, which provides for the governor to appoint a deputy within 14 days of a vacancy.

Speaking at the Bomas of Kenya during the launch of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report, Sonko stated, "I've got a very beautiful lady who is ready and immediately the president assents to that amendment bill, I'll appoint my deputy governor."

This is not the first time Sonko has promised to appoint a deputy governor, having previously identified a technocrat woman from the Kikuyu community in 2018 and shortlisting four women, including lawyers Karen Nyamu and Jane Weru, in August last year.
