Elgeyo Marakwet senator Kipchumba Murkomen has made a surprising U-turn on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report, now fully supporting it after previously opposing it.
As one of Deputy President William Ruto's key allies, Murkomen had been vocal in his opposition to the BBI report, which was seen as a potential boost to Raila Odinga's 2022 presidential ambitions.
However, just hours after the BBI task force, led by Senator Yusuf Haji, handed over the report to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, Murkomen took to social media to express his support for the report.
On Tuesday evening, Murkomen tweeted his reasons for supporting the BBI report, stating that it is 'President's own report and largely reflects the views of Jubilee,' does not require a referendum, is subject to further discussion and review, and does not amount to a 'tsunami' as previously feared.
His tweet attracted the attention of senior counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi, who praised President Kenyatta for coming up with the idea.
Abdullahi tweeted, 'I think this tweet by @kipmurkomen is a GAME CHANGER…unless ODM swings in the opposite direction the political class will be 100% United behind BBI…Give credit to H.E Uhuru…'
