Published on November 27, 2019, Kaloleni Sub County Commissioner Paul Rotich has issued a stern warning to disco equipment owners in the area. The ban on disco matanga, which was put in place to curb cases of defilement and pregnancies among minors, will remain in force throughout the December holidays.

Rotich stated that several music equipment have been confiscated and retained in his office, awaiting the owners who will face possible prosecution for defying the order. The government has directed that music be played during the daytime, from 6.00am to 6.00pm, when mourners, including minors, are expected to return home.

Despite criticism from some political leaders that the ban has had no impact on reported cases of defilement, Rotich claimed that there has been a significant reduction in cases of defilement and pregnancies in the area. He attributed this to the ban on disco matanga.

County Executive Member for Gender, Social Services, Culture, and Sports, Ms. Maureen Mnyazi Mwangovya, lauded the ban, stating that social workers will visit homesteads to sensitize parents and children on the need for behavioral change during the 16 days of activism in the Sub County.

However, not everyone is in support of the ban. A section of the political class, including Kaloleni Ward MCA Yassin Mohamed Noordin and Mwanamwinga counterpart Pascal Tuva Jacob, have faulted the government's move, alleging that there has been no impact as teenage girls continue to face defilements and pregnancies.
