Team Kenya will train in Kurume City, Fukuoka, Japan, ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, following a partnership between the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (Nock) and Kurume City.
The agreement was reached after a meeting between Nock officials, led by President Paul Tergat, and Hideki Noda, a senior advisor for Kurume Municipal Office Sports Division, at Panari Hotel in Nairobi.
According to Tergat, the Kenyan athletes will benefit from the Kurume City facility, which will help them acclimatize to the expected hot conditions in Tokyo.
‘Today’s meeting was to iron some issues, go through the draft and we have agreed that all disciplines that will qualify, will be accommodated apart from Athletics alone, so we are looking at about 200 including the technical management,’ Tergat said.
The partnership between Nock and Kurume City was established two years ago, and the two parties expect to seal the deal in February 2020. Team Kenya will report to the facility in May 2020.
At least 45 athletes have already qualified for the Olympic Games, consisting of two swimmers, 28 track and field athletes, and the national rugby teams – men and women.
