Published on November 27, 2019, the county labour office of Kisumu issued a seven-day notice to Nakumatt Kisumu, asking the retailer to clear workers' arrears.
The move came after 35 employees petitioned the government to intervene over salary arrears, citing that their contracts were due to end in January 2020.
The workers, who camped outside the store for three days, demanded their three months' pay, similar to their counterparts in Uganda and Tanzania.
They also alleged that Nakumatt failed to follow due process, as the retailer never issued a notice of termination.
The closure of Nakumatt Mega City has left the stores with only five outlets in the country.
