On November 27, 2019, the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Report was handed over to President Uhuru Kenyatta, proposing a new national holiday to unite Kenyans.
The report's nine-point agenda aimed to address the lack of national ethos in Kenya, and one of the key recommendations was to create a national holiday to celebrate Kenyan culture.
According to the report, the proposed national holiday could be celebrated on Boxing Day (December 26) or New Year's Day (January 1), both of which are already observed as public holidays.
"Replace Boxing Day on 26th December with a National Culture Day for celebrating culture and learning about other Kenyans' cultures (this could also be done on 1st January)," the BBI report read in part.
The report also proposed strengthening the Ministry of Culture and Heritage to promote local cultures and identities, and to document, protect, and promote ancient and historical monuments of national importance.
