Twitter has announced plans to delete inactive accounts and free up usernames in December, as part of its ongoing effort to improve the quality of information on its platform.
According to the company, any account that hasn't been signed in for more than six months will receive a warning to sign in by December 11th, or risk being deleted and its username becoming available again.
As part of its commitment to serving the public conversation, Twitter is working to clean up inactive accounts to present more accurate and credible information that people can trust.
As explained by a Twitter spokesperson, 'part of this effort is encouraging people to actively log-in and use Twitter when they register an account, as stated in our inactive accounts policy.'
Twitter's inactive account policy aims to 'present more accurate, credible information' that people can rely on. This could help users find the information they're looking for instead of having to wade through a sea of quickly-abandoned accounts.
However, Twitter hasn't yet said exactly when recouped usernames will be made available to existing users.
