Laikipia University to Award Eliud Kipchoge Honorary PhD

Laikipia University has announced plans to award Eliud Kipchoge an honorary PhD in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the world of athletics.

The ceremony is set to take place on December 6, 2019, at the institution's Graduation Square, main campus.

According to the university's vice chancellor, the decision to award Kipchoge an honorary PhD was made by the university's Senate following his outstanding performance in the world of athletics.

"The University Senate in making this award noted that Eliud has made tremendous contributions in the realm of sports. The senate specifically recognises his most recent achievement of becoming the first human in history to run a sub two hour marathon," the VC said.

During the Mashujaa Day celebration that was held at Mama Ngina Waterfront Park in Mombasa, Kipchoge was awarded the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH) award by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The award, given to him by President Uhuru Kenyatta, is the highest honour a civilian can receive from the head of state.

Laikipia University invites Kenyans and the international community to celebrate with us this outstanding and humble athlete who continues to give his best to inspire human kind," the university said.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, Honoris Causa is a degree given to a person as a sign of honour and respect, without them having to take an exam.
