As Kenyan parents increasingly opt for international education, the demand for elite schools in Nairobi has skyrocketed, driving up fees to Sh2.89 million ($28,479) per year, making the city's schools the most expensive in Africa, according to a recent survey released on November 26, 2019.
Among the six African cities surveyed, Nairobi had the highest average fee, with Cairo coming in second at an average of Sh606,253 per year. Kampala was fourth at Sh495,056 per year, while the minimum fees charged in Nairobi was listed as Sh272,864 per year, with Kampala charging the least at a minimum of Sh53,110 per year.
South Africa's Cape Town offered the cheapest median prices for international schools overall in Africa, with the average fee standing at Sh495,056 per year. The growing demand for elite schools in Nairobi has attracted new players to the lucrative private education segment, including Nova Pioneer and Sabis International School, partly owned by Centum Investment Company Plc.
