EastMatt Supervisor Captured Assaulting Female Cashier Denied Bail ¶
On November 12, 2019, a disturbing video surfaced showing Ibrahim Kiruti Taraiya, a supervisor at EastMatt Supermarket, assaulting a female cashier, Sharon Atieno. The incident sparked widespread outrage on social media, leading to Taraiya's re-arrest on November 23, 2019.
According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP), Taraiya was a flight risk and could interfere with witnesses, as well as pose a threat to the victim, who had been forced to quit her job and relocate to Nairobi due to fear for her life.
On November 25, 2019, Taraiya appeared before a magistrate court in Kajiado, where he pleaded for bail, citing his role as the sole breadwinner for his family. However, the prosecution pushed for his detention, and Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi ruled that Taraiya be remanded until December 6, 2019, when the case will be mentioned.
EastMart supermarket confirmed that Taraiya was their employee and had been laid off. The cause of the violent act has not yet been clearly established, but investigations are ongoing.
As the case unfolds, the public continues to express outrage and concern for the victim's well-being. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of workplace safety and the need for employers to take swift action against perpetrators of violence.
