As the holiday season approaches, many of us are faced with the challenge of maintaining our weight loss progress. The abundance of food and festivities can make it difficult to stick to our healthy eating habits.
According to MD Anderson, overeating can have short-term and long-term effects on our health, including indigestion, heartburn, and weight gain. To avoid falling off the wagon, here are four tips to help you stop overeating during the holidays.
Published on November 27, 2019, MD Anderson's article highlights the importance of mindful eating. One of the tips is to use a smaller plate. Serving food on smaller plates can trick your mind into thinking you have eaten a lot when in reality you have had a smaller portion of food.
Another tip is to eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are filled with fibre, which fills your stomach and leaves you feeling satiated. Eating lots of these, in the form of salads and smoothies, can help you eat far less carbs and reduce your calorie intake.
It's also essential to avoid distractions during meals. Practice mindful eating by keeping away your phone, novel, and switching off the TV. Focus on what you're eating, eat slowly, and savour the different flavours and textures.
Lastly, portion control is crucial. When visiting people, eat small portions wherever you go. Your host will be happy that you have at least eaten something, and you will be able to eat just enough to keep you satiated throughout the day without overeating.
