On November 27, 2019, Wanjiku Gatheru, a 20-year-old Kenyan-American student, made history as the University of Connecticut's first Rhodes Scholar. She was elected to the American Rhodes Scholar Class of 2020 to continue her master's studies at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom.
Gatheru, a senior majoring in environmental studies with minors in global studies and urban and community studies, was among 32 people from across the US selected for the prestigious program. The Rhodes Scholar program is among the world's most selective academic programs, boasting presidents, ambassadors, business leaders, and many other prominent Americans among its alumni.
As Gatheru reflects on her journey, she acknowledges the support of her family, mentors, and friends. 'As I reflect on my journey, it is extremely clear to me that my accomplishments – my story – is not my own,' she said. 'I stand on the sturdy shoulders of the many people that have supported me along the way.'
UConn President Thomas C. Katsouleas praised Gatheru, saying, 'Wawa is a rare talent who in her three years at UConn has built a legacy that will endure long after she has graduated.' He noted her superior intellect, depth of character, and unbridled energy, as well as her leadership on critical issues such as environmental sustainability and food insecurity.
At Oxford, Gatheru plans to pursue dual postgraduate degrees in Nature, Society, and Environmental Governance and Evidence-based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation. She was selected from a pool of 963 applicants nominated by their colleges and universities, and was chosen based on academic excellence and ambition to make a strong difference in the world.
