On November 25, 2019, Nakumatt Mega City employees in Kisumu arrived at work to find the store locked, with a notice on the door announcing its closure. The 37 workers, who were expecting to continue working until their contracts expired in January 2020, were left in the dark about the shutdown.
According to the workers, who spoke to Citizen Digital, the retailer's decision to shut down the outlet without proper communication has left them feeling shocked and betrayed. The employees claim that the store was still packed to capacity, indicating that there was no immediate need to close the outlet.
The workers have since served the management with a seven-day notice to clear their outstanding salaries, which amount to three months' worth of pay. The Ministry of Labour has intervened, compelling the retailer to settle the dues within the coming week.
