On November 26, 2019, a new twist emerged in the Monica Kimani murder case as a DNA evidence report was produced in court.

Government analyst Joseph Kimani testified that DNA on white straps used to tie the hands of Monica Kimani did not match Joseph Kuria Irungu, alias Jowie, a suspect in the case.

This new report may help exonerate Jowie, who has maintained his innocence and has been in custody since his arrest in September 2018.

Irungu, who was engaged to journalist Jacqueline Maribe, had pleaded with the court to release him on bail, citing his eight-month stay in custody as sufficient punishment.

However, a key witness testified that he had left Irungu with Monica Kimani in the house on the night she was killed.

Irungu and Maribe are charged with murdering Monica Kimani on September 19, 2018.
