Kenya Power's application to raise electricity bills has sparked concerns about the cost of living in Kenya.

According to a report by the Business Daily on November 26, 2019, Kenya Power has applied to the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) to increase the consumption charge for households consuming less than 100 kilowatts per month to Sh. 12.50 a unit, up from the current Sh. 10.

Households consuming 50 units monthly will see their bills increase to Sh. 961 from the current Sh. 816, representing a 17.8% jump when other charges like taxes, inflation, and fuel and forex levies are incorporated.

Small businesses like barber shops and welders will also be affected, with micro businesses consuming 200 units facing a 19.1% rise in their bills.

Kenya Power has cited operational challenges and the need for substantial investment to improve its services as reasons for the proposed tariff increase.
