On November 26, 2019, the M-PESA Foundation Academy made history by becoming the first learning institution to be recognized as the Company of the Year at the East Africa CIO awards.
The academy, which is just four years old, also received two other recognitions for its use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning.
According to Paul Ngugi, Head of Technology and Learning Innovations at the M-PESA Foundation Academy, the institution's integration of technology in education has been fully embraced by both learners and teachers.
"We are honored to have been recognized for our integration of technology in the way we deliver education," Ngugi said. "Our learners and teachers have fully embraced technology in the way they learn and teach, including the delivery of content, assessment, research, and presentations."
The academy's advanced infrastructure, which includes coding, animation, and robotics programs, has been a key factor in its success.
Les Baillie, CEO of the M-PESA Foundation Academy, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, saying, "This particular feat is recognition for the amazing work that our Technology and Learning Innovations team has done to ensure that our learners and educators are exposed to the latest technology and learning management systems."
The academy's commitment to providing a world-class, well-rounded learning environment has been recognized through its emphasis on the holistic development of its learners, including academics, technology, music, sports, the arts, outdoor pursuits, and community service.
As part of its efforts to promote STEM education, the M-PESA Foundation Academy partnered with the Airbus Foundation to launch the Little Engineer Program in Kenya, which aims to encourage students between the ages of 10 and 16 to understand and embrace technology.
The academy offers full four-year scholarships to economically disadvantaged students, providing them with a platform for academic and personal growth.
