On November 25, 2019, a massive landslide struck West Pokot, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The disaster has claimed over 40 lives and displaced more than 10,000 people.

According to Governor John Lonyangapuo, two doctors were airlifted to Muino and Tamkal at around 3:48 pm to attend to survivors. The governor noted that the landslide had cut off most sections of the Kapenguria-Lodwar Highway and feeder roads, making it difficult for people to access the affected areas.

“The over 15 camps housing the displaced persons are inaccessible through road,” he said. “We have set up a common ward at the county’s referral hospital for survivors of the West Pokot landslide.”

Deputy President William Ruto visited the survivors at the Kapenguria County Referral Hospital and later headed to Muino to assess the situation. He assured the residents that the government is mobilizing resources to help the victims of the landslide.

“The Government will support all the affected families,” the Deputy President said. “An extra helicopter will be dispatched to help in terms of logistics.”
