On November 1, 2019, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) gazetted the deregistration of Wilson Sossion, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary-General, as a teacher.
However, Sossion received a reprieve when the Labour Court suspended the gazette notice, pending the hearing and determination of the case.
Justice Stephen Radido issued the orders on Monday, effectively halting the deregistration process.
According to the gazette notice signed by TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, Sossion's name was removed from the register of teachers under section 30 of the Teachers Service Commission Act.
Ms Macharia stated that under the law, Sossion should not engage in teaching in any school.
The TSC had issued a notice of deregistration to Sossion in July 2019, giving him 90 days to appeal the decision and relinquish his position at the giant trade union.
The commission accused Sossion of paralysing the Competency-Based Curriculum forums in April 2019 and accepting nomination by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as an MP in 2017, contrary to TSC regulations.
