On October 23, Botswana held its general elections, which saw the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) secure 38 seats, while the opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) won 15 seats.
Published on November 26, 2019, the UDC has since disputed the results, citing irregularities in some constituencies.
"We do believe that there were irregularities in some of the constituencies," said UDC spokesperson Moeti Mohwasa.
The UDC is challenging the results in several constituencies, including Bonnington North in the capital Gaborone, where UDC president Duma Boko lost to the ruling party.
Complaints are heard and determined by panels of High Court judges within 90 days of their submission.
The BDP, which has ruled since Botswana's independence from Britain in 1966, was declared the winner after attaining the minimum 29 seats in the 57-member national assembly needed to form a government.
Mokgweetsi Masisi was then declared president, securing his first elected five-year term.
